One of the better known minerals is calcium which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Calcium deficiency leads to osteoporosis which is when the bones become weak and brittle, fracturing easily.

Dairy produce is rich in calcium, as well as white bread, green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruit and edible boned fish such as pilchards and sardines. Milk is a good source of calcium and is often seen as an essential part of a child’s diet, though if either you or your child is lactose intolerant then the other sources of calcium, listed above, provide other ways of obtaining your daily recommended allowance which is 700mg a day for both men and women.

Calcium is needed in conjunction with another mineral, phosphorus, in order to build bones. As calcium is so easily found in dairy products it can also tend to lead to an absorption of high fat content, so stick to low fat products like semi-skimmed milk to obtain your RDA.
