Selenium is an antioxidant which protects against harmful free radicals. It also makes thyroid hormones that control metabolism and helps maintain the immune system. It can be sourced in meat, fish, poultry, nuts and seeds. The RDA is 75 mcg (micrograms NOT milligrams) a day for men and 60 mcg a day for women.
To ensure you get enough of this mineral make sure your diet contains plenty of Vitamin E, which is found in vegetable oils, margarine, avocado, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables, eggs and wholegrains. It enhances the effectiveness of selenium.
