Sodium works with potassium to regulate the balance of fluids in the body. It is also needed to activate enzymes and conduct nerve impulses. Too much is linked to high blood pressure.

Sodium can be found in many foods in the form of sodium chloride – otherwise known as salt. Too much salt is a bad thing and we must be careful to avoid eating too many foods with hidden salts. The RDA is just 1.6g per day for both men and women. The majority of people do not have a problem getting enough salt, as many people eat far more than the RDA each day.

On average most of us have more than 9g of salt per day, but experts recommend limiting this amount to 6g. Avoid adding salt to food when it is being cooked and when it is served. Try flavouring food with herbs, spices, garlic, lemon juice, wine or pepper instead.
